Want hoe erg je ook aan je stuur trekt, met een grimas op je snoet rondrijdt en piepend en krakend de berg op stuurt: de Marmotte doe je voor je plezier. Om maar even kort te gaan: echt florissant heb ik niet gefietst, Net geen vier bergen, slechts drie....
Tot aan de voet van de Alpe, toen was het helemaal op. Het was eigenlijk op toen ik weer opstapte in Valloire, op weg naar de Galibier. De teller bleef onder de 10 kilometer per uur steken, ik werd alleen maar ingehaald door van alles en nog wat op de fiets. Opvallend veel Denen trouwens dit jaar. En Engelsen. En ook opvallend: zo veel Cervelo’s heb ik nog de laatste jaren heb ik nog nooit bij elkaar gezien. En trouwens ook veel Trek Madone’s, Specialized racers en veel eigen merken carbon frames. Campa en Shimano maken nog steeds de dienst uit, al zoefden er wel een paar ‘light weight’ racers met SRAM Red voorbij. Goh, dat ik daar allemaal tijd voor heb gehad om te bekijken... En ik dwaal af. Ik was tijdens de 15 kilometer naar de Galibier zo moe dat ik –zeer tegen mijn eigen gebruik- gestopt ben. En even ging zitten. En even liggen. En toen heb ik zelfs even geslapen. Om het in wielrentermen te zeggen: ik was niet goed. Ik was eigenlijk gewoon ‘slecht’. Kan gebeuren, besloot ik en de consequentie was en is dat dit stukje niet Toch weer die vier bergen heet, maar ‘Drie bergen waren genoeg –deel 7. Zo. Nu ga ik slapen. Ik ben nog steeds moe.

Ik kan me zo goed verplaatsen in jouw situatie. Daar hoef ik echt geen moeite voor te doen. Waarom? Het is mij ook overkomen. Sterker nog, het overkwam mij op exact dezelfde tijd en plaats. Op de top van de Galibier kruisten onze holle blikken elkaar kort. Twee uitgewoonde fietsfanaten, mogelijk al berustend in hun lot, herkenden hun eigen situatie in de ander.
Later, tussen de afdaling van de Lauteret en Bourg d'Oisans, heb ik nog even in je wiel gezeten om vervolgend kop over te nemen. Hierbij vond ik nog even afleiding in het bewonderen van de mooie Stevens waarop je reedt. Ik zag jou nog even een korte blik werken op mij Cinelli. Ik herkende jou als "die kerel van de Fiets", maar was niet in staat om de loze constatering uit mijn mond te krijgen. Het fysieke lijden ging weer verder waar het eerder gebleven was.
Met de moed der wanhoop heb ik me nog op de Alp gestort. In bocht 9 was het gedaan. Het lijf wilde niet meer omhoog. Achteraf bleek zelfs omlaag nog een opgave: bocht voor bocht naar beneden gekomen. Tussendoor in bocht 12 nog even een tefeoongesprek met m'n vriendin om het leed te delen. Echte kerel, nietwaar?
Een pijnlijke nederlaag die ik niet gewoon ben. Achteraf wel logisch te verklaren (en te verwachten) doordat ik na een valpartij voor de Marmotte wekenlang in de lappenmand heb gelegen.
Volgens jaar beter. De herinnering aan het lijden is dan allang diep weggestopt. De gedachte van persoonlijke triomf voert dan weer de boventoon!
