To calculate the mass difference for filling the tire with helium instead of regular air, we'll follow a similar approach as before.
Convert the diameter of the tire to meters:
Diameter = 630 mm = 630/1000 = 0.63 m
Calculate the volume of the tire:
Volume = π * (radius)^2 * width
Radius = Diameter/2 = 0.63/2 = 0.315 m
Volume = π * (0.315)^2 * 0.03 = 0.009396 m³
Convert the pressure to Pascals (SI unit):
1 bar = 100,000 Pascals
Pressure = 4 bars = 4 * 100,000 = 400,000 Pa
Use the ideal gas law equation to calculate the number of moles of helium:
PV = nRT
n = (PV) / RT
where:
P = Pressure in Pascals
V = Volume in cubic meters
R = Ideal gas constant = 8.314 J/(mol·K)
T = Absolute temperature in Kelvin
Assuming room temperature of approximately 298 Kelvin:
n = (400,000 * 0.009396) / (8.314 * 298) = 0.015236 moles
Calculate the mass of air:
The molar mass of air is approximately 28.97 grams/mole.
Mass = n * molar mass
Mass = 0.015236 * 28.97 = 0.441 grams
Calculate the mass of helium:
The molar mass of helium is approximately 4.00 grams/mole.
Mass = n * molar mass
Mass = 0.015236 * 4.00 = 0.060944 grams
Therefore, if you fill the bicycle tire with helium at 4 bars of pressure, the mass of the helium inside the tire would be approximately 0.060944 grams.
To calculate the mass difference, you would subtract the mass of the air (0.441 grams as calculated previously) from the mass of helium (0.060944 grams).
Mass difference = Mass of helium - Mass of air
Mass difference = 0.060944 grams - 0.441 grams
Mass difference ≈ -0.380056 grams
Hence, filling the tire with helium instead of regular air would result in a decrease in mass of approximately 0.380056 grams.
