Sheldon Brown gaf in 2004 onderstaand antwoord op ongeveer dezelfde vraag. Kortom is lastig zelf te doen maar lagers zijn industriele lagers en goed verkrijgbaar bij een zaak waar ze dit soort producten verkopen. De vraag is hoe oud de wielen zijn, want is het de moeite waard?

I have A 2003 TREK 5200 which came with bontrager racelite wheelset, my front wheel developed noticeable side play, disassembly, within hubs are sealed bearings with no adjustment for play. Do I have to replace sealed bearings to eliminate side play, sideplay sign of wear? Do I need to bo to a bontrager dealer?

Cartridge bearings can only be serviced by replacement. A certain amount of play is normal, but if it's excessive, it suggests a worn out bearing.
Cartridge bearings are a standard industrial product, any good sized city will have a bearing dealer. There will be a code number on the side of the bearing, might need a magnifying glass to see it. Usual bicycle models have a 4 or 5 digit number, most often begining with 6.
There are a variety of fairly expensive special tools avaialble for extracting and replacing the cartridges. Might be better to take it to a dealer unless you're brave and ingenious.
